THE ladies of Thurlestone Golf Club had a long day out on Friday, August 30 for their final fixture in the Devon League at Saunton.
They were lucky with the weather and to have Claire Guard playing in the team who ended up being the only victor. A big thank you still goes to all of the brave ladies who took on the East course and the ladies of Saunton.
Six shots was the minimum being generously given up on a difficult day so they were even more up against it, battling hard to give a good account of themselves all the same.
The course is a wonder of the world and an awesome golfing experience so despite losing, everyone from Thurlestone had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed the excellent hospitality from the Saunton ladies.
Overall results see Saunton advance to the quarter-finals and Thurlestone came behind them in second in the group.
Captain Judith Lungmuss expressed thanks to all who played in this competition this season. Sue Ansley is taking on the role of Captain next year and the club look forward to supporting her and playing in her team.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday 28, the ladies played the Doris Willes Little qualifying foursomes and once again, they were happy to have no wind, although there was a wet feel to the weather. The course was in beautiful condition and for the ladies who had early tee times, it was a very pleasant round. However, the poor ladies at the back of the field weren’t so lucky and got absolutely soaked when a heavy rainstorm moved in.
Once again there were some impressive scores and the top three places were secured by Judith Lungmuss & Kaz Phillips (44 points), Diane Baker & Hayley Pepperrell (39 points) and Brooking & Heather Spencer (38 points).
There were three birdie twos and congratulations go to Tess Brownill & Bridget Lafferty on the 6th hole, Kaz Phillips & Judith Lungmuss on the 6th and Jacky Jacobs & Tsai Wharton on the 13th.
The ladies President's Team have won their division and have reached the quarter-finals and have been drawn against Okehampton. The match was played at Churston on Friday, August 16 but unfortunately, Thurlestone lost 5-2, so now hope for better luck next year. They have all enjoyed playing in the team and supporting their captain Pam Adams from start to finish.
