TEIGNMOUTH Golf Club hosted the 325 Celebrations Cup as part of their centenary year, an event held at Thurlestone in 2022 and Bigbury in 2023.
The event is like no other in the golfing calendar, involving all sectors of the clubs and even the club professionals.
27 golfers participate from each club and whilst the event is competitive, scored as an individual stableford, everyone enjoys a friendly day.
Teignmouth’s course was a serious challenge, with heather punishing slightly wayward shots, and slick wavy greens robbing players of a shot on many holes.
Thurlestone and Bigbury team scores were 702 and 694 respectively, but there was no stopping Teignmouth in taking the trophy on their home course, with 815 points. Thurlestone were able to take home a number of the individual prizes thanks to some some outstanding performances though.
Included in the success were Chairman Graeme Fairley, who scored 37 points and contributed to his group’s success as the men with the most point. Also, Sheila Fairley carded an impressive 33 on her first visit to Teignmouth and her team won the ladies’ prize and Junior Captain George Inch winning best individual man on 41 points.
Last but by no means least, Club Professional Steve White achieved a hole-in-one, courtesy of a beautifully struck iron shot on the 16th, a second hole-in-one in his 40 years of golf.
Thurlestone came second overall and now look forward to their return to hosting duties next year.
Elsewhere, there were six juniors playing for the Summer Cup on Thursday 22, in really testing conditions with wind and rain. The winner was Martha Massingham (25) with 41 points from Will Robson (15), 37 points and Finn Robson (30), 30 points.
The ladies competition on the previous day was the Allcomers Cup and it was a bright but very breezy day that produced some very good results. The overall Allcomers Cup winner was Kaz Phillips with 40 points. In 2nd place was Mary Swan (39 points) and in 3rd place was Victoria Gibbens (39 points).
Back to Thursday now and there was a reduced field of only 17 players in the midweek Stableford, battling through the weather. Luke Barron (25) came out on top with 34 points, edging out Jeremy Poyntz (24) who scored 32.
Congratulations to Wilf Cunningham who had the only birdie two on the 17th hole.
Finally, there were 41 entries for the Prowse Salver on Sunday in very windy conditions. The winner was junior Aiden Mulligan (14) with Nett 65 from Colin George (4) Nett 68 and third Mark Latham (11) Nett 69.
There were eight birdie twos achieved by Dan Cunningham, Mark Drew, Steve Inch, Mark Latham and Colin George.
