AFTER a good few weeks of serious competitions, it was time for the Dartmouth GC ladies to have some fun, so both courses played a nine-hole Waltz, with the added bonus of a mulligan.
Jan Cousins is the in-form player at the moment but had a slow start this week, coming to life after the judicious use of her mulligan on the third hole.
Putting it next to the pin for a tap-in birdie was the perfect use of this little golf quirk and unsurprisingly, her 44 points was the winning score. Jan Brooking was next up, coming in second on 34 points.
The Dartmouth Course ladies were also scoring well. Sharon Jones didn’t manage a 12-point hole, but two 9-pointers and two 8-pointers more than compensated for the blobs and so she finished on top with 38 points. Barbara Dally had only one blob but no high-scoring holes and finished second with 32 points.
The club is always pleased to contribute to the Dartmouth Regatta events with a Regatta Open competition and this year was no exception. It was unusual as an individual event with Moray from Scotland being the most distant this year.
Hole 14 required a good carry over the water and this was no problem for Robert Hornby (Moray), whose first shot proved to be the longest drive of the day.
Steve Atkins was the men’s winner on 43 points, ahead of Paul Thorogood (Taunton & Pickeridge) on 39pts and John Oldrieve on 38pts.
Jan Cousins led the way for the ladies on 37 points, edging out Karen Oldrieve (35pts) and Tina Scanlan (34pts).
John Grattan and Beccy Barrett won the respective nearest the pins plus Chris Mayer had the longest drive for the women.
Season-long competitions are coming to a conclusion, including the Sandbanks Trophy. Played as a medal over two rounds, Lee Marel eased to the scratch title with a score of 139, the next best being 156 from Edd Mitchell.
Lee also topped the handicap title but it was much closer, with father Paul one shot back on 141.
To the Men’s Shareholders Cup, an individual knockout, which has a gruelling 36-hole final. Dave Nicholls took on Ian Metchette and won 3&2 in a true testament of stamina from the both of them.
Jules Vincent and Greg Pearman lifted the Rocket House Trophy, a summer mixed knockout comp, beating Chris and Brian Mushens 3&2 at the final hurdle.
Lastly, the Dartmoor League team played Dainton Park and enjoyed a 3-2 home win and stay top of their league with two matches to play.
