THURLESTONE Golf Club hosted the Links Hotel Cup on Sunday 26, which is a net competition over 18 holes of medal play for members with handicaps of 18 and below. This round is combined with the results of the Thurlestone Hotel Cup to produce the winner of the Membland Trophy.
The winner of the Links Hotel cup was Wilf Cunningham (16) with a nett score of 69, from Vincent Lowden (8) who shot nett 70. In third place was Steve Pike (-2) with nett 71on count back from Alistair Whalley (8), also 71.
Meanwhile, on Monday 13th May (home) and Friday 17th May (away at Torquay) the Seniors played their two-legged first-round match in the Emerton Court Trophy against Torquay GC.
The first leg at Thurlestone was played in weather that was so bad it defied description. In five close games, Torquay came out three games to two ahead. Several of the players on both sides were convinced that they were suffering from hypothermia which took several strong drinks to aid recovery.
Upon the return to Torquay for the second leg, the golfers were greeted by a glorious South Devon day and the home advantage told in the end. Torquay won four games to one, the overall score therefore being 7-3 in Torquay's favour.
For those who are unaware, the Emerton Court Trophy has been played for the last fifty years and is contested by all the clubs in Devon and it is the senior’s equivalent of the Palairet Trophy. Thurlestone will now have to wait until 2025 to have another crack at it.
The club were also represented at the recent US PGA Championship of all places. Our resident PGA Professional, Tracey Loveys, made the long journey to Valhalla in her capacity as PGA Board member. Unfortunately, Tracey did not see much golf as time was taken up with marketing/networking. Tracey also managed to leave her voice back in the USA and returned home a bit under the weather.
Switching tone to the Junior side of things and their Club Championships were held on Saturday 18 in very dark and thundery conditions. Fortunately, the weather passed over just in time, allowing nine juniors to go out and give it their best.
The winner of the Jenny Underhill gross cup and the new Junior Club Champion is William Hoskin (2.9) with a very impressive gross score of 73. The winner of the Steve White Cup was Oliver Chester (22.4) with nett 66.
Lastly, the President’s team had a home fixture versus Churston on Friday 24.
Congratulations go out to the whole team for a fantastic result, everyone winning their match resulting in a 7-0 win. The next match is an away fixture against Churston in 2 weeks.
