BIGBURGY Golf Club’s seniors enjoyed their special Olympic Trophy competition, which is always played prior to the opening of every Olympic Games (weather permitting). As readers will know, this year the Olympic Games are being held in Paris with the opening ceremony taking place on Friday July 25.

The winner of the Bigbury Senior’s Olympic Trophy this year was Moran Chapman playing off his handicap of 25; Moran recorded a very good score of 41 Stableford points. The runner-up and with only one point less was the Club President Eddie Inch playing off his handicap of 17 and he will present Moran with the Trophy at the club’s Prize-giving Ceremony later in the year.

This trophy is held alongside a mid-week Stableford and there was a very large entry of 76 players. The course was in excellent condition and the weather was favourable leading to many very good scores by the players in both Divisions One and Two.

Peter Hamon (12) was the Division One winner recording 41 points. There were then three players who had scored 38 points and on countback, it was John Smith (13) in second place, Peter Burgess (14) in third and Peter Newman (11) in fourth.

It was a double for trophy winner Moran, whose 41 points meant he also won Division Two. Yet again, countback was needed to decide the second and third places as two players recorded 40 points; the computer showed it was Peter Hamon (12) in second place, and Olympic Trophy runner-up Eddie was third.

With their very good scores, all these six players will have received reductions in their handicaps so congratulations to them.

There were four birdie twos recorded on this day and these were bagged on the 10th, 15th and 17th holes by John Smith, Rob Luckens, Diggory Vowles and Phil Towner.

Elsewhere, July 13 proved a lucky day for Cherry Patterson who was amongst a 30-strong field of ladies vying for a coveted title.

With a very good score of 39 Stableford points, a delighted Cherry (26) won the Bi-Centennial Secretary’s Cup. In second place and on only one point less was Ross Hanley (34), with 38 points. Once again the computer was needed as there were three players with 37 points. In third place on countback was Angie Newman (29). There were no birdie twos so the kitty will roll over to the next Saturday competition.
