PAM Adams held her Ladies’ Captains’ Day on Wednesday July 10 at Thurlestone Golf Club.

The good weather was matched by the good-hearted mood for this fancy-dress team game, with two scores to count from each team of three ladies. The ladies didn’t disappoint with the “anything beginning with P” fancy dress and neither did Pam in her immaculate Pooh-Bear outfit.

Everyone had the option to buy a shot from the Pros and the green was peppered from an array of outstanding efforts.

Standout costumes included 1950’s Pink Ladies, Pilates instructors, Police officers, Prisoners, Punks and Psychedelic swingers to name a few.

Turning attentions to the action on the course and a trio of Police officers, Bernice Sweetman, Tess Brownill and Liz Lacon, finished eight shots clear of second place on a superb 88 points.

It was the Punks team of Bad Babes: Barbara Smith, Heather Spencer and Sue Ansley who were named as the best dressed time whilst two individual prizes went to the fabulous Pamela Anderson Baywatch outfit (and superb karaoke performance of the theme tune) by Gill Hicks, and Punk rocker Joan Booth.

In other news, members played a reverse Cross Country event on Sunday, playing a new version of the course in an anticlockwise direction. This was a 12-hole, 4-person team Texas Scramble competition, in aid of the Captains’ Joint Charity, Devon Air Ambulance.

Kaz & Martin Phillips and Nicki & Peter Smith came out on top with a nett 33 and next up, a shot behind, were Bridget Lafferty, Malcolm Strang and Chris & Sue Vaughan. All the participants received DAAT badges and key rings, but the winners and second places received credits on their accounts and an extra special DAAT helicopter model for the first-place group.

Thurlestone’s warm summer sunshine was largely contrasted by the monsoon-level rainfall soaking players at Stover GC. A third-round knockout match in the Palairet foursomes was taking place there against Axe Cliff and Thurlestone pairings had to give no less than 10 and as many as 13 shots to the opposition.

It goes without saying that this made it an even tougher task yet after four pairs had completed, the scores sat at 2-2. The final TGC pairing lost their match on the 17th green after a spirited display and so it was a narrow 3-2 defeat for the team. Well done to everyone for their efforts.

Lastly, there were 54 members taking part in the Veterans’ Cup mid-week Stableford competition for gentleman over 60. The winner was Graham Bromilow (30) with 41 points, from Malcolm Strang (12) with 40 points, and third was David Smyth (15) with 39 points.
