DESPITE the threatened wet and windy conditions, Totnes Bowling Club held its opening day on Saturday.
Club Captain Fred Martin, reigning men’s champion Ron Coish and ladies’ champion Jenny Goss all delivered their first bowls to make a start to the season.
The break in the rain did allow all the members present to take part in some bowling – albeit for a short time until the weather turned worse once again.
The coming season is intended to be a busy one with a new impetus to attract new bowlers to the sport. Coaching sessions for anyone wanting to try out the sport will commence on Saturday, April 20, from 10am to 12-noon and will continue every Saturday morning until September. The club is also involved in the Bowls England initiative, “Bowls Big Weekend”, when the club will be open to visitors from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 25 and 26.
During this event the club will be visited by two former members, Sam Tolchard and Harry Goodwin, whose bowling careers began at Totnes Bowls Club and have gone on to be world champions. Anyone wanting to arrange a visit at any other time can contact Membership Secretary Gary Hooper on 01364 73291.
The coming season involves club teams competing in various bowls leagues plus a variety of friendly matches which start later in April, and the club will be entertaining a number of bowls club teams who are visiting Devon for a variety of bowls holiday breaks.
