THANKFULLY, Bigbury golfers have been able to play some of their matches owing to the continuing sterling work of head greenkeeper Richard Shapland and his team.
The 2024 Captain, Linda Hanbury, reports that three ladies competitions were lost during March, and goes on to say that being desperate to play, on March 23, 15 determined ladies entered their Stableford competition. She is not sure how many completed the full 18 holes in the awful conditions; gales then two horizontal hailstorms resulting in trolleys blown over, umbrellas inside out and one player blown completely over in a bunker!
Congratulations to the 15 ladies who turned up for this competition and well done Kim Flook (23), a convincing winner with a score of 32 points. In second place was Sarah West (19) with 28 points, and coming third was Amanda Burchell (6) with 26 points.
There were no twos so, again, any kitty will be rolled-over.
The next day, the weather was kinder for the Men’s Stableford competition and there was a good entry of 52, as well as very good scoring.
The winner with a score of 42 points was Mike Daniels (15); second place had to be decided by a count back as there were two players only one point behind. Dan Foster (18) was second with Bob Brocklehurst (8) third. However, Bob will have been pleased with his brace of twos on the third and 15th holes. Phil Davidson also recorded a birdie two on the third hole and David Hills bagged his on the 17th hole.
The Lady Captain hosted a fund raising Soup and Puds Lunch in March and it proved to be a great success. Delicious home made soups and desserts were enjoyed by 54 happy and generous diners; there was also a raffle and some donations. There was a fun atmosphere with the early arrivals very reluctant to leave; many were pleased to support the Charity Lunch and were enjoying meeting up again with friends not seen for a while.
Linda says she was delighted the lunch raised a wonderful £901 for her chosen Charity, the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Motor neurone disease (MND) affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord that help tell your muscles what to do. It is a disease that is fatal and incurable. The Motor Neurone Disease Association is here to give people facing MND vital support and improved care – and bring us closer to finding a cure for MND.
She thanks all the Bigbury golfing ladies for their hard work with all the preparations as well as on the day. Linda also thanks the Bigbury Memorial Hall for the use of their lovely hall.
