THURLESTONE juniors began their Friday club nights this week with Andy Robinson in charge. They meet at 5.30pm and play different formats each week right through until September. All junior members are welcome to attend.
Seven juniors played in a stableford competition on Saturday and the winner was Finn Robson (32) with 33 points, from Martha Massingham (27) with 31 points. In third was Jacob Brooker (20) with 27 points and fourth was Will Robson (16) with 24 points. There were two birdie twos – congratulations to Martha and Will.
The ladies’ Devon League team was in action on Thursday with a home match against Tiverton. They were lucky to play their first match of the season at home on the best day of 2024 so far. The sun shone, the skylarks sang, and the greens were in good condition.
They showed their very friendly opponents from Tiverton a good time. They play in a team of six in individual match play and go out in handicap order. First out was Liz Sharman, followed by Barbara Smith, Gill Markham, Judith Lungmuss, Jane Mahood and Diane Baker. They all had competitive games with the scores seesawing throughout but finally the results were a resounding victory; five wins and one match halved.
We will look forward to our return fixture with Tiverton as we all had a great day and thoroughly enjoyed our golf.
The midweek stableford on Tuesday was played in very blustery windy conditions which resulted in no fewer than 14 players failing to register a score. However, 19 hearty souls did so with Stewart Barnes mastering the conditions in first place with an impressive 30 points. On the same score but pipped on count-back in second was John Rogers with Andy Wood just behind with 29. An excellent effort by Ashley Crow achieved the only two on the sixth hole.
Thurlestone seniors hosted a senior team from Dartmouth Country Club on Thursday. The weather was not looking very good in the afternoon so the two captains agreed to hold the match over nine holes so that neither team would be caught in the imminent rain storm that had been forecast.
Even though the matches were played in dry weather the wind as usual played its part into making the course very entertaining. The Dartmouth team were very complimentary on the condition of course bearing in mind the amount of rain we have had recently.
Thurlestone came out winners at the end of the matches, winning 3.5-2.5 with Ken Riley winning nearest the pin on six and Colin Cooper winning nearest the pin for the Dartmouth team.
All players enjoyed a good meal afterwards and are looking forward to the return match in May.
