This “unique” equestrian property was once home to a Grand National winning jockey - and now it could be yours.

Hawson Court Cottage, in Buckfastleigh, was the childhood home of Jimmy Frost, who won the Grand National in 1989 and began his training career at Hawson Court.

Jimmy’s daughter, Bryony Frost, is also a jockey, and in 2019 became the first female jockey to win a Grade I race at the Cheltenham Festival.

The cottage is on the market for the first time in more than 60 years, and is believed to date back to approximately 1750.

Inside the property, there is a large kitchen opening into a dining room, as well as a sitting room with a fireplace, a study and a utility room.

To the right of the entrance, a hall leads to the three bedrooms, one of which has a dressing room, a family bathroom and two WCs.

The cottage is in need of some renovation throughout, but retains many original features.

Adjoining the house is a courtyard of traditional stables, as well as a central tack room with wood-panelled walls and a loft room.

To the west of the property is a newer building, a detached timber chalet with two-bedroom accommodation and its own private garden.

Further equestrian facilities include an American barn and a former sand school, as well as a former water walker and a currently unused barn.

The grounds span approximately 14 acres, comprising a main pasture field and woodlands that lead off the property.

The property is being sold by estate agent Luscombe Maye for a price of £1,500,000.

The agent commented: “Coming to the market for the first time in over 60 years, Hawson Court Cottage is an intriguing proposition with immense potential to create a stunning family home of incredible character.

“Situated in a fabulous location, there is potential for further development subject to planning permission.

“Steeped in racing history, having been the childhood home of Grand National winning jockey, Jimmy Frost and where his successful training career began. Hawson is now ready to begin its next chapter and has many stories to tell along the way.”
