Walter C Parson League Cup
Elburton Villa 1,
Ivybridge Town 9
Ivybridge cruised through to the last 16 of the league cup and laid down a marker for tomorrow's game against their near neighbours with this performance.
On a dismal night, Town were in a different league to their opponents and looked every inch the league's top side in what was a true demolition job.
Two goals in the first seven minutes set the scene, Lee Doel bundling home from player-manager Mark Berry's corner before Luke Brown pulled one out of the top draw with a delicious chip to double the Bridgers' advantage.
Brown, who had a superb game for the visitors, won the penalty that led to the next goal midway through the half, Hanrahan burying the spot-kick.
Another defender, Jordan Walton, was next on the scoresheet, rifling home a fourth to make Ivybridge's intentions clear. Elburton gave the fans something to smile about just before the half-time whistle.
The half-time team talks did little to change the narrative of the match, with that man Brown picking up the visitors' fifth goal with a stunning 25-yard drive.
Elburton deserve credit for keeping their discipline and not folding, and managed to contain the rampant Bridgers until the 80th minute.
Unfortunately, however, goal number six sparked an avalanche of goals to leave a truly one-sided scoreline.
Lee Doel doubled his personal tally with a daisy cutter before striker Steve Sutton made it seventh heaven for Ivybridge. Todd Hanrahan added number eight before Walton completed a fine night with his second to leave the Ivybridge supporters delirious with joy.
Town did not find things quite as easy on Wednesday night, however, when they travelled to face Witheridge looking to stay ahead of the chasing pack.
Witheridge have shown they can compete with any side on their day, so Town will have beeen more than pleased to collect three points with an efficient 1-3 victory to stay six points clear at the top.
Elburton could be forgiven for feeling some trepidation as they consider welcoming back Ivybridge tomorrow, in the league this time, though it stretches credulity to imagine a similar result.
Any win, though, is vital for Ivybridge if they are to maintain the lofty position they have worked so hard to achieve, particularly after Wednesday's win.
