AFTER finishing 3rd in the Tribute Counties 3 Devon South West league last season, Salcombe RFC have ambitions to match or improve on that position this season, writes 1st XV coach Tom Woods.

Pre-season ran over the summer every Thursday night and was well attended.

We have retained the services of our head coach, Eoghan Grace, for the coming season, a former player for the likes of Munster, Exeter Chiefs and Ireland sevens. He will once again, be assisted by Mark Lidstone and myself.

Our captain this season is Lee Clarke- Lee has played for Salcombe throughout his career and is “very proud and honoured” to captain the side this season.

The playing squad is a good mix of youth and experience with players from around the South Hams, three new recruits arriving in the off-season. A huge amount of work has been carried out both on and off of the pitch, new dugouts, nets behind the posts and the playing surface treated by groundsman Chris Kemp.

There has also been major change in the clubhouse with seating and decorations as the rugby club continue their ambition to play their part local.

Club Chairman John Sprague echoed this sentiment, saying that, “Salcombe RFC is much more than just a rugby club and is a focal point for the local community so this year, we have had the clubhouse completely refurbished to improve facilities for all.”

John went on to add: “So come on up and enjoy the fun- everyone can be assured of a warm welcome at Twomeads and we look forward to seeing you all soon.”

This positive atmosphere that rang true before the season began was reinforced in the opening-day victory over Kingsbridge 2nd XV.

Toby Woods scored twice in the 35-5 victory whilst Jordan Anderton was able to dictate the play from start to finish in the middle of the park.

From one South Hams rival to another as Ivybridge 2nd XV were the next opponents on Saturday, September 14.

Scoring 32 points is a very impressive feat and so to still be beaten made for an unusual outing.

A win and a loss in two rivalry games is a respectable start to the new campaign either way with attentions now turning to a trip to old friends Old Technicians.
