Tribute Western Counties West Kingsbridge 41, Wellington 12
KINGSBRIDGE started their double header Easter weekend with the visit of Wellington to High House on Saturday and comfortably achieved a bonus-point win to push themselves up to fourth in the table above Truro. The hosts opened the scoring after only eight minutes as prop Buster James gained the touchdown from a catch-and-drive move following a line-out deep in the Wellington 22. Two minutes later and the hosts were further ahead as lock Jack Cope, returning to the team following injury, crossed over for the second try. Cope added his second try of the half, and Kingsbridge's third, on the 30-minute mark as he exploited space on the blind side to touchdown in the corner and take the hosts to 15-0. This remained the score until the interval. Kingsbridge opened the scoring early in the second half as a quickly taken penalty in their own 22 saw scrum-half Billy Burner take play 50 metres up field before offloading to fly-half Ben Newman. Newman in turn found captain Ben Glover, who powered through the Wellington 22 to score the bonus-point try in the corner and take the score to 20-0. Prop Mike Powell was next on the score sheet as he peeled off from a 10-metre catch-and-drive line-out to touch down wide out. Ashley Treeby added the conversion to take the score to 27-0. Wellington then enjoyed their best period of the game as they picked up a loose Kingsbridge pass to go the length of the pitch to score a converted try and then scored a second try on the blindside from a scrum deep in the Kingsbridge 22 to reduce the score to 27-12. Back came Kingsbridge again as replacement scrum-half Matt Barlow squeezed in under the posts from the base of a ruck deep in the Wellington 22 for the home side's sixth try of the game. Treeby's conversion took the score to 34-12. The home side's final try of the match went to number eight Matt Hamilton, who broke clear on the blind side from the Wellington 22 to run in unchallenged to score. Treeby again converted to complete the scoring at 41-12. Kinsgbridge 91, St Ives 5 KINGSBRIDGE turned on the style in their final home league game of the season as they ran rampant over lowly St Ives at High House on Easter Monday. The Blue and Whites ran in a total of 15 tries and were 77-0 ahead before the visitors got themselves on the scoreboard. The hosts had opened the scoring after only three minutes as lock Charlie Cust broke away from a ruck on the Wellington 22 to score in the corner. Centre Ashley Treeby converted for an early 7-0 lead. Four minutes later and the hosts were further ahead as a break from full-back George Banfield created an overlap on the right which allowed Treeby a free run to the line to extend the lead to 12-0. Only two minutes later and try number three was on the board as number eight Jack Cope crossed over and the conversion from Treeby made it 19-0. Kingsbridge secured the bonus-point try with less that a quarter of the game gone as flanker Matt Hamilton crossed over from a close range ruck for try number four. Treeby again converted to make it 26-0. Captain Ben Glover was on hand to score try number five as he latched onto the end of a pop pass from scrum-half Tristan Couch on the St Ives 22 and then powered through to touch down to make it 31-0. Try number six came from Greg Parrott as the ball was swung from right to left and the left wing showed his pace along the bottom touch line to score in the corner and make it 36-0. On 36 minutes breaks from deep in the Kingsbridge half through hooker James Westlake and prop Mike Powell resulted in a second try for number eight Hamilton, which was again converted by Treeby to take the score to 43-0. On the stroke of half-time scrum-half Couch and number eight Hamilton combined to put prop Powell clear to race in for try number eight, which took the interval score to 48-0. Powell was on hand to cross over, from close range, for his second try of the game at the start of the second half as Kingsbridge passed through the 50-point barrier. The home side's tenth try saw the forwards and backs combine well with great support play on the left and put full-back George Banfield clear along the touchline to cross over in the corner. Treeby converted again for 60-0. Banfield repeated his first try almost immediately afterwards as he exploited the overlap on the outside and used his sheer pace to defeat the final defender. Lock Cust was next on the score sheet with his second try of the game as he outpaced the covering St Ives defence on the clubhouse side to run in from the 10-metre line. Prop Powell and scrum-half Couch then combined with breaks from the half way line to put winger James Trout away from 10 metres for the 13th try of the game. Treeby converted again for 77-0. Despite the scoreline the visitors never gave up trying and ran the ball at every opportunity they had. They were rewarded for their efforts when they rounded off a period of sustained pressure near the Kingsbridge line with a try from close range to make the score 77-5. Back came the hosts again to score two final tries in the remaining eight minutes of the match. The first saw replacement scrum-half Billy Burner take a quick tap penalty that resulted in full-back Banfield crossing over for his hat trick try and the final score of the game saw flanker John Merrin break clear to put prop Powell away to also complete his hat-trick. Treeby converted both of the late tries to complete the scoring at an astonishing 91-5.
