ON A glorious, summery Sunday at Thurlestone Golf Club, the mixed team entertained a mixed team from Stover Golf Club.
Following a highly competitive series of matches played in a competitive but with a very friendly atmosphere, the result was a win for Stover by 3 ½ points to 2 ½.
The closeness of the score was highlighted by the fact that three of the matches went to the last hole. There were wins for Richard & Judith Lungmuss and David & Jane Smyth. Following the match, the teams were treated to a tasty meal in the Clubhouse. All agreed that the course was in fantastic condition and now Thurlestone look forward to next year’s fixture at Stover.
Elsewhere, 36 ladies enjoyed playing in a version of the Solheim Cup last Wednesday. The teams, GB and USA, were matched as evenly as possible in course handicap. The format was Foursomes off scratch for the first six holes with winners receiving one point, the next six holes were American Greensomes, off scratch, for one point. Then, the last six holes were an individual Matchplay, the lower handicap player against lower and higher against higher with two points available. This was played off handicap.
Flags and bunting were present on the tees and around the clubhouse with the winners at the end, by 20pts to 16, were USA.
Thurlestone are currently sitting in second place in the West Devon Junior League, just a few points behind Staddon Heights. A few matches are left to play so there is still time for the lead to change.
Meanwhile, the Junior Academy has paused for the summer break. The last event was a Junior Access Event with some 30 juniors taking part and the majority progressed onto their next colour band. The academy will restart in September.
Junior summer camps have started and are designed to cater for young golfers of all abilities. All sessions will involve fun and exciting games and most are now full or nearly full. Please contact James Knight in the pro shop for more details.
The Senior Section continues with a busy program of roll-ups, competitions, friendly matches and the senior captain’s away day.
The friendly matches were played against Teignmouth and St Mellion, taking place in glorious weather with both courses in tip-top condition. This didn’t work to our advantage however, and both resulted in losses for TGC.
On Thursday July 25, Seniors’ Captain Gary Keen held his annual away day event. Played at Dainton Park GC on a day when TGC was closed due to poor weather, a very enjoyable, dry, day which included both team and individual competitions, resulted in Bill Hutchison, Philip Colman and Brian Goodhew winning the team game, and yours truly winning the individual competition. A great day out was had by all.
