DARTMOUTH Golf Club ladies were playing their final Medal rounds of the season this week and on the Championship course, the top three players all finished with the same gross score, so it was down to handicaps and count back to sort out the places.
Chris Mushens and Shelley Durrans have the same Handicap Index, so count back gave Chris first place and Shelley second, with Jan Cousins on the lower handicap in third.
The results were close but clear in the Dartmouth course nine-hole Medal with Marion Bell finishing first on nett 32, just ahead of Anne Woodward on 33. In her first competition since acquiring her handicap, Katie Panton was third with 39.
On to the Men’s Midweek Medal and this was also the final of the Shareholder’s Trophy, which players qualified for by a top three finish in one of the Midweek Medals or Stablefords from the preceding 12 months. A par on the tricky fourth hole (stroke index 2) and a birdie on the seventeenth contributed to Rob Barrett’s trophy-winning nett 70, four shots ahead of Pete Hannaford and six ahead of Lee Marels.
The main event of the week though was Saturday’s Barrett Cup - a mixed Stableford competition sponsored by Malcolm Barrett. The weather had forced two postponements so there was great relief when the forecast rain didn’t materialise, although strong winds made for a tricky back nine.
Here is a roll call of the trophy winner and of all the winners of prizes which are generously provided by Malcolm.
1st for the men was Colin Weedon on 39, ahead of Dave Nicholls and Brian Mushens, both of whom scored 37.
Karen Oldrieve came out on top in the Ladies competition, beating Maria Warman to the summit with a score of 35 against Maria’s 33.
It must have been a good day for Karen as she won the nearest-the-pin award on the third, with Lee Marels (5th), Jeremy Enticknap (7th) and Steve Atkins (18th) joining her.
Clive Meredith fired off the longest drive for the men on hole 14 and who else won it for the ladies on the 16th, it was of course Karen.
There were also gifts for Dartmouth League Captain, Dave Nicholls for the record-breaking score achieved by the team and to Competition Secretary, Brian Mushens, who had wrestled with tee times and schedules to enable the rearrangement.
Huge thanks go to Malcolm for a great day which was greatly enjoyed by all.
