DARTMOUTH GC seniors played a qualifying Stableford competition on Monday 24 June off of the championship blue tees.
In this one, points were also up for grabs for the senior of the year title where Gary Bonser leads with 55 sliding scale points.
A fine day saw golfers make hay while the sun burnt the fairways, none more so than Mario Aresti who scorched round in a gross 75 equating to forty-one Stableford points. The ex-scratch golfer parred fourteen holes and birdied the last in what was probably the senior round of the year- very well done sir!
He was followed closely into the house by Messrs Whitelaw, Whitworth, Hall and Bonser who all had stunning rounds.
A rare bird was spotted on the course today, but not in the air. An albatross two was carded by flying Scot Alistair Forbes at the par-five eighth hole.
It was a reduced field of 26 today because of a competing competition at Tavistock but nevertheless, virtually everyone recorded 30+ points which suggests the track is in fine fettle, all down to our excellent greens staff.
Overall competition results: 1st- Mario Aresti (41pts), 2nd- Michael Whitelaw (40pts), 3rd- Mark Whitworth (39pts), 4th- Tony Hall (39pts), 5th-Gary Bonser (39pts) and 6th- Alistair Forbes (37pts).
Mario won Division One ahead of Michael whilst Division Two was led by Paul Harding (35pts) and Paul Stubbs (34pts).
The trio of twos scored were courtesy of Mario on the 18th, Mark on the fifth and of course Alistair on the eighth.
In other news, the third round of the Seniors’ Golf League was played at Churston on 20 June and it wasn’t such a good day for Dartmouth, finishing fifth overall and mustering just two points.
Despite five pairs registering scores in the mid to high 30s, it was not good enough on the day to provide the league uplift needed. With two rounds to go, there is still an opportunity to finish in the top three.
Churston are top of the table on 24 points, then comes Staddon Heights (22) and Dawlish Warren (20). Dartmouth and Downes Crediton are tied at 12 apiece.
Steve Atkins & Gary Bonser beat David Thompson & Philip Brooking in round two of the Perring Cup, a pairs knockout competition whilst there were also a number of Blight Trophy fixtures played- the individual knockout.
John Oldrieve beat Steve Atkins, Ian Metchette beat Nigel Osborne, Ian Black beat Gary Bonser, Mark Mitchell beat Robert Wotton, Paul Marels beat Tony King and lastly, Kevin Hoare beat David Sparks.
Next week sees the second round of the seniors’ cup competition and the first leg of the Tamar Cup against St. Mellion. Watch this space for the results!
