THE ladies at Thurlestone Golf Club enjoyed a Closed Meeting, held on Wednesday, September 4 in windy weather. This is a medal competition played in the autumn with a maximum handicap index limit of 40.4.

No lady may win two prizes unless the second is the Cooper Putter. The trophies are for the best scratch scores and handicap scores in Divisions One and Two and also the Veterans’ and Venerable Veterans’ categories.

Nine cups and trophies were on the line with ladies’ captain Pam Adams presenting them to the lucky winners afterwards. 30 ladies took part this year.

Jane Mason won the Marshal Salver (best scratch score in Division One) with a score of 89 whilst Maggie Best’s Nett 73 won her the Marshall Trophy.

In Division Two, Hayley Pepperrell came out on top with a gross 97 and won the Montgomery Rose Bowl and Nikki Smith got her hands on the Bronze Bowls thanks to a round of Nett 71.

On to the Vets competition which is for ladies between 60 and 69 years of age. Heather Spencer scored a Gross 90 to win the MacKenzie Vets Rose Bowl and Judith Lungmuss carded a Nett 73 to top the Pearl Rowland Trophy charts.

Players 70 or older were in the mix for the Venerable Vets honours and it was Liz Sharman and Jane Mahood who prevailed, scoring Gross 91 and Nett 73 respectively.

The Cooper Putter was won by Maggie Best with 30 putts.

Meanwhile, on Bank Holiday Monday, the Thurlestone members played a Mixed Greensome Competition for the Goblets Trophy, and the winners were Hayley and Steve Pepperrell with a great score of 48 points.

Second were Graeme and Sheila Fairley with 43 points and in third were Kaz and Martin Phillips on 42 points. There were three birdie twos from Bridget Lafferty and Paul Millburn-Fryer, Derek Harwood and Jane Mason, and Alec and Sue Esplin, congratulations to them.

On Friday, September 6, there were 98 entries for the Seniors Open from clubs all over the West Country and some even from Wales. The winner overall, and in the over 70 Seniors category was Don Thompson (20) from Thurlestone with 42 points. The under 69 category was won by Mark Kerslake (22) with 41 points, from China Fleet Club, Cornwall.

On Saturday there were then 160 entries for the Canada Cup Open Competition from clubs all over Devon and Cornwall. The winners were John Rees (20) and I Taylor (24) with a score of 80 points. Second were Steve Griffiths (9) and Jamie Easton-Johns (6) with 80 points. There were 22 birdie twos scored.
