DARTMOUTH ladies were playing for two trophies this week, one on each course.
On the Championship course, it was the Badger Bray - presented by the late Joan Bray, the bronze badger trophy is one that all ladies love to win. It was a close contest!
Jodie Kenyon is just moving to the Championship course after starting on the Dartmouth and was relieved to have a Stableford rather than the Medal competitions she has played in recently.
Capped at a playing handicap of 36 for the trophy, she had a slight wobble mid-round, but two four-point pars including one in the final six holes contributed to a 37-point finish. The strong finish was vital and resulted in a countback win over Karen Oldrieve. Many congratulations to Jodie on her first trophy win.
Countback was also needed for the Holden Trophy on the Dartmouth course. Marion Bell was playing in her first full competition since recovering from a badly broken ankle and was unsure how many holes she would manage. It turned out to be a full round and another strong finish saw her beat Barbara Dally on countback. More congratulations!
Meanwhile, it was the third round of the Men’s Gold Grand Prix on Saturday and yet another close finish on the long gold Championship tees. Mark Collins and Stuart Jamieson matched each other for points on both the front and back nine, but pars on five of the six final holes to give an easy countback win.
A special mention goes to Edd Mitchell in third place, who birdied the tenth - many players quake at the sight of the tee shot over the wooded ravine.
One competition in which there was no need for countback though was the Mixed Weekend Stableford.
Parring a number of holes on the front nine, Rob Knight’s 22 points had established a good foundation to start the back nine. That level of golf is hard to maintain, but a further 17 points gave him a clear win with 39. Keith Sexton had a better back nine, including a birdie finish, but 35 points was insufficient to challenge.
