CONDITIONS were perfect for the Senior Championships at Thurlestone Golf Club on Thursday August 1.

Given these conditions, the likelihood of a great winning score was always on the cards, yet no one really expected it to be just this great.

With no real pointers from his previous competitions, except from a team win in the recent 3-man team event, Rob Hyde played a superb round of golf where the fairways seemed to be as wide as a football pitch, and the cups seemed as big as buckets.

Rob took full advantage and delivered a final score of 79 gross, 57 nett to record one of the rounds of the season!

Well done also to Richard Cordy in second place (93 gross, 64 nett) and Malcolm Britton in third (95 gross, 67 nett). Congratulations Rob Hyde, the Senior Champion of 2024, what a round, one to remember.

With great foresight, in 1909, a trophy was established called the Allcomers Cup to encourage all golfers to come together and test their skills. After many decades, the spirit of the original contest continues, and on Sunday August 4, 56 golfers came together on a stunning summer's day.

The Thurlestone course was in excellent condition- the greens were fast, smooth and true, fairways, fringes and surrounds cut to millimetre perfection and the rough waiting silently for any misdirected shots.

It was a good day crying out for a good score and there were quite a few of those. The top 13 scores were nett par or better.

Fourth, third and second places all had 39 points with Tony Adams taking the runner-up spot due to an impressive 21 points on the back nine. The best score however, and Allcomers Cup winner for 2024, with an excellent 42 points, was Don Thomson playing off 21. Congratulations Don, very well played.

Third place was Shona Wilson (22) with a nett score of 74.

The winner of the Junior Cup for Division two players was Kaz Phillips (33) with nett 70, from second place Jane Mahood (27) with nett 73. Third Place was Nikki Smith(29) with a nett score of 77.

Lastly, the ladies’ Presidents Team have won their division and have reached the quarter-finals, getting drawn against Okehampton. The match will be played at Churston on Friday August 16- best of luck to them and let’s hope the weather is kind as well.
