WHAT an incredible festival of sport happening right now for us all to enjoy.

This is no different at Bigbury Golf Club where competitions are continuing apace. Amongst the winners, with excellent scores on the same weekend, were Ladies’ Captain Linda Hanbury, and her husband Nick.

On the Saturday, there was a good entry for the difficult ladies Medal format competition and two divisions were needed.

Division One was convincingly won by Margaret Taylor (22) on a strong Nett score of 66, whilst countback was needed to decide the runner-up: Kim Flook (21) edged out Karen Graddon (19).

Division Two was even more competitive and Linda Hanbury (25) led the way with an excellent Nett 65.

Countback was called upon again and it was Angie Newman (30) who scraped past Dian Clasby (36) into second, both recording a 66.

The Medal competition was played in tandem with the Westlake Trophy Round 1 and the best score by any player over the two rounds will win the coveted Honours Board Trophy so Linda is leading the way but there are a few ladies hot on her heels.

No birdie twos were recorded in this competition so there is a roll-over to the following week.

47 men took to the course for a Stableford competition the next day and there were some incredible scores once again.

Nick Hanbury was the winner with his score of 44 points but in second place and just one point behind was Phil Winder (20). The computer was busy on this weekend as yet another count-back was needed to separate three players with a score of 38 points.

It was Tim Chatfield (18) who took third place, with Peter Hamon (11) fourth and Tim Stacey (15) fifth.

There was a plethora of birdie twos recorded in this competition, too many to list in fact, but interestingly, the winning players put together their brilliant rounds without a two on the card.

Linda and Nick say that their scores were recorded in a weekend of superb playing conditions. Linda also said that these rounds only occur occasionally but from the start she felt it was going to be a good day. Nick said he also enjoyed the exceptional conditions and especially the speed of the greens.

Both had their moments during their games with Linda missing an out-of-bounds by some six inches and needing a very good rescue shot to ensure only a bogey score. Nick had to recover from the start of his round with three bogies!

With the scoring over recent competitions in such fantastic golfing conditions, members’ handicaps are tumbling and Linda and Nick put out a pair of scores for others to beat.
