THURLESTONE Senior Captain Gary Keen hosted his away day on Thursday July 25.

On a day that threatened to be a complete washout due to rain and heavy drizzle, 18 hardy members from Thurlestone's senior section joined Gary Keen, at Dainton Park.

As if pre-ordered, the first tee time arrived, the rain stopped, and the weather cleared to give everyone a dry and thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of golf.

A three-ball team game, together with an individual Stableford competition saw Bill Hutchison, Philip Colman and Brian Goodhew take the team prize. Jim Stewart won the individual Stableford competition with 37 points.

Prizes galore, generously donated by Jeremy Poyntz were awarded for individual Stableford scores, twos and birdies.

Elsewhere, it was a long but sunny day on Monday for the Ladies’ Devon League team as they travelled to Honiton.

They all had to give a lot of shots to the home team of very steady golfers. Thurlestone ladies did well to have two match wins, one match halved and three lost resulting in 7.5 points, to the 7 of Honiton. Many thanks go to all the players and for the very friendly hospitality from Honiton.

Second time lucky! The ladies' Sheelah Creasy team were due to play their final match of the season against Fingle Glen at home on Monday July 15, a day dogged by a dire forecast. Instead, this match was played on July 22 in breezy conditions, allowing a convincing 5 - 0 victory for the Thurlestone team.

That was their last match this year with three wins and three losses overall: not sufficient for Thurlestone to go forward to the next round but a valiant effort nonetheless. The team are to be thanked for their consistent commitment.

This week the ladies had a non-counting competition called Shine for Nine, over 18 holes or as many holes as the ladies wanted to play as long as at least 9 holes were played.

It is a game where you think the pressure is off but if you don’t score well on the front nine then the competitive instinct cuts in and suddenly your desire for a birdie or a par comes into play.

First were Sue Lennox & Martha Massingham both on 28 points, second were Judith Lungmuss, Bridget Lafferty & Nikki Smith on 26 points, and third were Claire Guard, Shona Wilson, Jane Smyth, Liz Stewart, Pam St Ledger & Ruth Downing on 25 points.

Congratulations to those who scored birdie twos: Wendy Laud on the 3rd & 17th, Sue Lennox on the 13th, Ruth Downing on the 3rd.
