The latest update has been dreaded by many this year and not just because winter seems to have come early! In broad strokes the energy price cap fixes the maximum price that can be charged for each unit of energy on a standard - or default - tariff for a typical dual-fuel household which pays by direct debit.
We seem to have gone directly from a soggy spring into a soggy autumn, and in such a grey dank year ANY cost increase to ANY bills is no fun but it's even less fun if you’ve just had your winter fuel allowance taken away without notice.
With data correct at time of going to print between October 1 and December 31 2024, gas prices will be capped at 6.24p per kilowatt hour (kWh), and electricity will be capped at 24.50p per kWh. The price for energy for a typical household who use electricity and gas and pay by Direct Debit will go up to £1717 per year - an increase of 10 per cent adding around £12 per month to an average bill.
