This “iconic” Georgian house for sale has a "secret garden" and was formerly a naval gentlemen’s home.

Summerhill, in Strete, is thought to date back to 1820 and had been lived in by naval gentlemen up until recent years.

The property, which is Grade II listed, retains period features such as character windows and fireplaces.

On the ground floor, the entrance hall includes traditional-style floor tiles and leads to a formal dining room, currently used as an office, with a wall of bookshelves and a floor-to-ceiling French window, plus an ornamental fireplace.

The drawing room is to the right of the entrance hall, with another French window and a working fireplace.

The orangery-style kitchen has a lantern roof and a wall of glass, being an early 2000s extension to the original home with recycled pine units.

Completing the ground floor is a bedroom with its own wine cupboard, a cloakroom and a walk-through pantry.

Upstairs, the principal bedroom was originally two rooms, with a French window and internal shutters, as well as its own en-suite shower room.

There are two further bedrooms, one of which has an ornamental fireplace, and a family bathroom.

Outside, the garden is described as a “treasure trove of botanical delights” and is surrounded by Grade II listed stone walls.

There are two sheds in the grounds, as well as a single garage to the side of the house.

The property is being sold by Winkworth for a guide price of £925,000.

Stephen Levy of Winkworth Dartmouth said: “We were absolutely delighted to be instructed with the marketing of Summerhill.

“Georgian period houses seem to be getting rare and to discover this Georgian Gem was exciting. The owners believes the original dwelling on this site was built in 1820 and it  has been lovingly maintained throughout the years.

“The house had an extensive makeover in 2003/2004 when the “orangery style” kitchen, with lantern roof, was added on to the west of the house.

“This opens on to the garden, with its walls and fences creating a  bright , private and sun drenched space for all members of the family to enjoy.

“Families throughout Summerhill’s history have each made their own botanical contributions and there is always something to discover as the seasons unfold.

“One can easily envisage Pimms in the garden on a lazy summer’s afternoon. With all the charm and character the property has to offer we expect keen interest in Summerhill.”
