Further to the letter from Richard White regarding the deterioration of our iconic post boxes, Chronicle, September 9, I fully agree with him – and they truly are as iconic as our telephone boxes, red buses, union flag, palace etc.
I noticed the rapid decline of these boxes a few years ago and decided to do something about it. I wrote to the head postmaster, who in turn had someone in authority contact me. I was asked to locate every post box in Bath that I felt needed some love and attention and was assured a shiny coat of paint would be applied to each.
Bath is a rather big city, and without exception every box had been severely neglected, and it was impossible for one person to locate so many.
However, those I was able to locate were dually refurbished and it has lifted each to a level that we can be proud of once again.
Dartmouth is a magnificent town and its beauty and cleanliness is second to none, but… those post boxes. In particular the one outside Marks & Spencer.
Come on Royal Mail, a tin of paint and half an hour and the postboxes would be restored to their former glory.
