IVYBRIDGE's remembrance poppy display has proved a real eye-pleaser for the town. The poppies have now bloomed in numbers in tribute to all the Ivybridge servicemen who lost their lives during the first world war. The remembrance garden came about thanks to an initiative by the town's Royal British Legion and town council – supported by South Hams council's green space team. The volunteer initiative transformed Harry's Patch – named after the last surviving WWI foot soldier – from an overgrown area into a bright and appropriate commemorative garden. The display is next to the roundabout on Marjorie Kelly Way on the main route through the town and is seen daily by thousands of drivers. The project was supported by district councillors Mike Saltern, David May, Louise Jones, Kathy Cuthbert and Tony Barber, who each contributed £100 from their community budgets. Devon County councillor Roger Croad contributed £500 from his locality budget. Councillor Saltern said: 'It looks absolutely splendid. 'I know that a lot of work went into this and it is greatly appreciated.' Royal British Legion committee member Ray Wilson started the project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the first world war. He said: 'Everyone says what a pleasure it is to see it in Ivybridge. It is very, very visible. 'We have had some very nice compliments through Facebook. It has been really well received. 'We have had great support from South Hams and from local firms who have provided goods and services free. He added: 'This is one of those projects that had whole community support based on a vision. 'The end result has far exceeded that vision. And all of us who have been involved, either through support or physical input, are very proud of what we have achieved.' South Hams green space team brought in decorative boulders by tractor and cleared the weeds and prepared the ground while the RBL supplied poppy and zinnia seeds. Malcolm Collins, deputy principal of Ivybridge Community College, added his praise for the display. He said: 'The whole display is fantastic. Please pass my congratulations on to all involved.'
