A village football club is in the running to receive a grant from a supermarket.
Ugborough Football Club has been selected to participate in the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. Until August 31, shoppers are to be given a token they can choose to put in one of several boxes representing various good causes at Tesco Lee Mill.
The number of tokens in their box at the end of August will govern whether the club receives £1,000, £2,000 or £4,000.
Ugborough describes itself as a "developing" club that would make great use of the money.
A spokesman said: "The club is based on providing football opportunities for local children, relying heavily on players and parents to be fully involved and show commitment. We cover the majority of our overheads via a ‘pay as you play’ training and match fee.
"In 2016-17, the 10th year of the club operating UFC ran four teams: under eight, ten, twelve and fifteen. Overall, we had more than 70 players play league games and train with the club and we see no shortage of kids wanting to get involved.
"We continue to keep kids involved and have recently been awarded our Charter Standard for the coming year.
"Our ethos is on having fun and developing everyone, rather than winning trophies. Our club offers club members and their families the opportunity to improve fitness levels, engage socially, provide access to opportunities and improve physical and mental wellbeing.
"It provides members and their families the opportunity to feel valued through integration and we are keen to continue to develop this by offering family members the option to become more involved in the development of the club.
"We offer Football Association level one and two qualified coaches who are DBS checked, together with a safeguarding officer and assistant to ensure children are kept safe at all times while members.
"To get involved with UFC, pop along to a training session every Saturday throughout the year at Ivybridge Community College, from 9.30am to 11am. Our home pitch is at Hillhead, Ugborough."
