A South Hams couple celebrated their diamond anniversary on Saturday in the place where it all began.
Joined by 23 family members, George and Jane Putt, nee Brooking, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the very same place where they had their wedding reception all those years ago.
George, from South Pool, and Jane, from Island Farm Stokenham, were married by the Rev Bartlett at Stokenham Parish Church on August 2, 1958. The wedding reception was held at the Crowing Cock, Torcross, so it only seemed fitting to celebrate their anniversary with a family meal in the same place - which is now known as the Boat House. They were joined afterwards by other friends and family at Stokeley Farm, where they enjoyed an afternoon of bubbly, speeches, and a cake made by sister-in-law Jean.
Both Jane and George attended Kingsbridge Secondary Modern School, and George played for the Kingsbridge Rugby Club from an early age where he went on to play for Devon Schools and England Schoolboys in 1950/51.
Six-year-old Jane along with her family were among some 3000 people who were evacuated from Stokenham for the D-Day practices in 1943/44.
George and Jane initially met at a rock n’ roll evening in Stokenham Parish Hall before George did his National Service in Germany.
After their wedding, the happy couple moved to the Torbay area where they still live, often visiting Torcross and Stokenham because of the fond memories. They have two children and four grandchildren, and still lead a happy, active life and love each other as much now as they did 60 years ago.
