It’s up and running! South Devon’s newest and most spectacularly located restaurant is open for business so why not be amongst the first to check out Oceans Restaurant.
The culmination of a dream by Sean and Hazel Hassall – to create a restaurant taking full advantage of the stunning views from high on Bolberry Down at their new development, Oceans Reach, on the site of their Port Light Hotel – brought to fruition with local restauraters, Rod Seymour and Nick Croft.
As they explained, “Oceans Restaurant will operate independently from The Sloop Inn at Bantham (which will still continue under our ownership) but we can bring our knowledge and experience within the trade; our excellent relationships with local suppliers; and love for the fabulous local produce to the new business. A love shared by our Head Chef, Lizzie Alsop, who is well known within the area with an established following of her own!”
An ethos which has influenced the project throughout, with a design sympathetic to its setting; glass used wherever possible to maximise the incredible views; and the involvement of local contractors in all aspects of the build, fitting out and interior design. “We were determined that this development should benefit the local economy, not only once it was complete and operating but also during its construction. Our main contractors were WM Construction and we are indebted to Kris Mahon for his steady hand bringing the project in ahead of schedule; the cosy log burner was supplied and installed by Dave Broadgate of South Hams Chimneys & Stoves and Steve Coombe of 3idog was responsible for the amazing interior design. Saffron Plumbing looked after our plumbing needs; electrics were courtesy of Ben Howden and Matt Lamble handled our decorating. We are also grateful to Homecare Alarms for ensuring we stay safe and sound!”
With a contemporary feel to the restaurant; squishy squashy sofas for relaxing in around the fabulous log burner; and sun drenched terracing for dining al fresco, Oceans Restaurant is a place to enjoy for all seasons and for all reasons. With 40 covers inside and an equal number out, it would make an incredible venue for private functions so do consider this newest dining option when planning your next celebration.
Morning Coffee and cakes from 10am; lunch served between 12 noon and 3pm; Cream Teas in the afternoon; and dinner service from 6 – 9pm, Oceans Restaurant is currently open from Thursdays to Sundays inclusive (winter opening) but will be operating daily during peak times.
Whilst Lizzie is in charge of the kitchen, Hannah Veale, well known to regulars of The Sloop Inn, has moved across to manage Oceans Restaurant, with both ladies relishing their new roles and very much looking forward to welcoming you to Oceans Restaurant.
With Lizzie at the helm, you can be assured of local produce from local suppliers; her description of the menu styles…“Unsurprisingly, the freshest fish and seafood will feature significantly along with exciting char grill options; healthy, lighter options and welcoming bowls of hearty soups for walkers. Look out for some interesting Pan Asian influences given my Thai training and there will always be that good old favourite – Fish & Chips at its best. The menu will expand with time so if there are any particular favourites you would like to see included, do mention it when you visit – sensible suggestions, of course, and probably with the addition of our own special twist!
And don’t forget we do Sunday Lunches, too – what more could you want on a winter’s day than a roaring fire and traditional roasts with absolutely no effort for you?”
