THE QUAY toilets in Kingsbridge have once again been subjected to attacks by vandals.
The Gazette were contacted by a woman from Salcombe, who wrote: ‘I paid to use the ladies on the Quay at around 10.30am today.
‘I would have thought they should be clean and at least have toilet rolls. This was not the case. The floors were dirty and had paper bits on them. There were no toilet rolls and the cardboard centres were on the floor.’
The letter continued: ‘When I complained by telephone to the council office, I was told that it was up to the district council and that they would report it to them. They told me that they are cleaned every morning, and this is what people are like now.’
‘I don’t think that this would make them that dirty in a couple of hours,’ the woman added.
Kingsbridge town clerk, Martin Johnson explained that ‘we get this sort of letter occasionally.’
‘It is district council business, but we know that their cleaners scrub that place spotless. They work hard every morning, cleaning from 7am for an hour, and then come back throughout the day to clean and replenish toilet rolls.’
Mr Johnson continued: ‘But you only need a couple of people messing around, and they can look dirty again.
‘Unfortunately public toilets are a dirty business - and maintaining them is a thankless task. At 10am they could be spotless, but by 10.30am they could be a complete mess.’
‘The message to the public surely is - leave things as you’d like to find them,’ Mr Johnson added.
