A club formed specially for women that has been in existence for more than 90 years is finally calling it a day.
The Totnes Townswomen’s Guild was launched in 1930 to provide support and friendship to its members.
But the Covid-19 pandemic and dwindling membership have now spelled the end of the once popular club.
Chairwoman Betty Harvey said: “It is with great sadness that I have to announce the closure of the Totnes Townswomen’s Guild after 91 years of service in Totnes.
“The guild was formed in 1930 and continued all through the war years, offering help and comfort to many during this dreadful time.
“Over the years it has raised and donated many thousands of pounds to local charities, and has provided help, support and most of all friendship to countless ladies in our area.
“The guild has always been a welcoming and fun place to be with many activities from craft, rambling and bridge - not forgetting the hilarious performances by the drama group.
“Sadly, however, age, Covid 19, and dwindling membership have forced this decision.”
The guild’s final meeting will be in the form of a Christmas shindig at the Methodist Church Hall in Fore Street at 2pm on Monday December 13, where a final cheque for £1,000 will be presented to Totnes Hospital League of Friends.
Betty said: “The officers and committee wish all our members past and present a very happy Christmas.”
