A fundraising extravaganza, organised by local resident Lisa Butcher of Love2walk K9s, has raised in excess of £3,000 for Save the Children.
The event, held at the Riviera Centre in Torquay, headlined 80’s band Doctor and the Medics, along with top after dinner speaker Bob ‘The Cat’ Bevan and popular local band Society Rocks.
Lisa said: “We are delighted the event was such a huge success. Almost 200 people attended and thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment. There must have been a lot of sore feet the following day! We also had an auction with top prizes, which helped us to raise such a significant amount.
“There are so many crises at the moment across the globe, and I wanted to do something to help alleviate some of the suffering so many children have to endure.”
Lisa is already gearing up for the next fundraising event, an 18 mile sponsored walk on Saturday, September 16.
The route follows the Templar Way from Haytor to Teignmouth. The Way traces the route by which granite was exported from Dartmoor via the unique Haytor Granite Tramway and the Stover Canal. ?Lisa said: “From Haytor the walking is quite easy as it is downhill. It takes in a wide range of scenery including open moorland, woodland, river valleys, passing old quays and locks and along estuary foreshore; fascinating examples of the old tramway and canal are passed.”
Save the Children provides help for children in 120 countries around the world, including the UK. There are over 3.5 million children living in poverty in the UK alone, and together with major crises in East Africa, South Sudan and Syria to name but a few, the charity needs much help in delivering the necessary care.
