A village primary has put in a great performance at a cross country meeting involving 100s of pupils.
More than 400 children from primaries in the Dartmoor School Sports Partnership entered the first of this year’s cross country events, held at Stover School near Newton Abbot.
South Brent Primary School took 32 runners from Years 3 to 6, who ranged from seasoned competitors to youngsters entering their first race.
Year 3 and 4 girls got things started with some solid running on the one mile all-terrain track, coming home in respectable positions for their first time on the course. This set the tone for subsequest Brent efforts, with further top 20 finishes by Year 3 and 4 boys and Year 5 and 6 girls, who were missing some key runners thanks to a secondary school open evening.
Finally the Year 5 and 6 boys got their chance, featuring 11 of South Brent’s 32 runners. From the off, it was a two horse race between Bovey Tracey’s leading boy and South Brent’s Eddie Lauri. Eddie took the race by the scruff of the neck and took a strong lead, closely pursued by his Bovey rival. But Eddie’s perseverance saw him hold off the challenge and finish the race as partnership champion, something he and everyone at South Brent are very proud of.
He had strong support from his team mates, six of who ended up in the top 50 in the race.
A school spokesman said: "Although Eddie’s efforts stood out, every South Brent child should be very proud of their attempt. Well done to you all."
