VISITORS to St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Brixton, were treated to prawn crackers last week as they viewed artworks created by pupils for the Chinese New Year.
The whole school community took part in a week-long celebration of all things oriental, with workshops to produce lanterns, drums, temple paintings and Chinese scripts featuring the children’s names.
The youngsters’ choreographed dances, developed with the help of local experts, used ribbons, fans and martial arts together with a large sculpture of a dragon they had made.
Headteacher Claire Webb said: ‘Our children in Years 5 and 6 also learnt a script of the great race to tell the story of how each animal was given their year in the Chinese calendar.
‘Everyone had a thoroughly good time, not to mention the visitors who enjoyed prawn crackers while looking at the art displays.’
