Primary school children have been captivated by a production of a play without words.

Stowford School in Ivybridge had a visit from Theatre Alibi, who performed Apple John by Daniel Jamieson.

The play tells the life story of a man called John, and the growth of an apple tree from a pip cast out the window of a train by John’s mother.

The two lives are explored side by side: John as he journeys from childhood through adolescence and eventually to old age, and the apple pip from a tiny seed to a mature fruiting tree. Each face challenges along the way including illness, sadness, heavy snow and a hurricane, as well as blossom, fruit, babies and love.

The play is told through music, puppetry and the clever use of a projector, but without a single word. The children enjoyed the performance saying: “it was funny”; “I really liked the music”; and “it was fantastic!”

Some classes will use the experience as a source for English lessons.
