Fire crews from across the South Hams are battling a barn fire that started in the early hours.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received eight calls to a large barn on fire at Churchstow, between the Bantham Roundabout and the Church House Inn.

Three fire engines, from Kingsbridge, Modbury and Salcombe and one water carrier from Plympton, were mobilised to the incident at around 4am on Monday morning.

Police closed the A379 between the Bantham roundabout and the Church House Inn, Churchstow, and advised residents to close their windows.

When crews arrived, they confirmed Upon arrival the crews confirmed the building was well alight and requested the assistance of a further two crews. These were sent from Ivybridge and Dartmouth.

Crews got to work with compressed air foam, one hose reel jet, one main jet on a fire involving hay in a barn. Crews also confirmed asbestos in the roof that was affected.

Crews increased firefighting to 2 main jets, with 2 breathing apparatus and a gas monitor. Crews also dampened down the boundary area including a bungalow.

Update at 9am: 12 hay bales are being damped down at the rear of the barn. Two fire appliances are still in attendance, as well as fire investigation officers.
